In
disagreement over the future of GT racing, the
partners of the BPR Organisation separate. Stéphane
Ratel Organisation, with the active support of Jürgen
Barth, becomes the organiser of the new FIA GT
Championship. This sees the direct confrontation of
five manufacturers in GT1, Porsche, Mercedes,
McLaren BMW, Lotus and Panoz, and four in GT2,
Chrysler, Porsche, Marcos and Ford Saleen, with an
average grid of 45 cars. The breathtaking contest
between JJ Lehto and Bernd Schneider continues right
up to the last race, offering one of the best shows
ever seen in long distance racing. Mercedes in GT1
and Chrysler in GT2 win the titles on the
Californian =track of Laguna Seca, signalling the
success of European-style GT racing in America. The
Lamborghini Supertrophy races in China for the first
time and has a resounding success with both the
public and the media.
